Grassfield School

Grassfield School is located in the Township of Gardnersville, a suburb of Monrovia. The School was built through financial support from Sida. Grassfield School started operation in the academic year 2003. The school is run by LDA-Liberia, supported by LDA-Sweden (through donations and member contributions), Forum Syd and others.

When construction started in 2003, a particular target group was Liberian refugees who had to return from Ivory Coast when hostilities broke out there. With Sida’s support a building containing 12 classrooms, offices for administrators, a library, a small computer room and toilet facilities was erected. The school building was extended in 2007/08 – again financed by Sida – so that the school now hosts 1200 students in 26 classrooms.

Grassfield School runs from Kindergarten to Senior High School. It can offer its students and teachers quality facilities that are rare in Liberia, including a fully-equipped computer cabinet and science laboratory. Also, teachers receive in-house training twice every school year (funded by Forum Syd until the end of 2009). Students benefit from the work of the HIV/Aids and first aid department of Grassfield School. Extra-curricular activities range from quizzing contests to sports and cultural events.

Grassfield’s students are among the best of the country! In the 2009 graduation, 63 out of 66 students passed the exam – 95%. This rate lies above the national average of 64%.

Grassfield School is a private school. While LDA receives some external support, the school also has to charge tuition fees in order to cover its running expenses. In contrast to other private schools, Grassfield’s students only pay a minimum fee. Kindergarten children do not have to pay school fees. In addition, LDA runs a sponsorship program with the help of engaged members. Thus, LDA functions as a bridge between governmental schools and expansive private schools.
