Rebuilding infrastructure

Wenneh Public School (2010)

Wenneh Public School is located in the Community of “16 Gate” (Margibi County), 50 km away from the capital city, Monrovia. The community (approximately 4500 people) lacks infrastructures and other essentials like many other rural areas in Liberia. As Wenneh Public School was burnt during the war, the community town hall is currently used to teach 385 students (250 boys, 135 girls). Wenneh Public School is the only school in the community and is running from kindergarten to 6thgrade. The governmental school caters to 11 villages.

With funding from Sida, LDA intends to rebuild the former 6 classrooms and build 3 additional class rooms as well as an auditorium/cafeteria, offices for the school’s administration, a well equipped library/reading room, pit latrines for boys, girls, female instructors and male instructors and a well with a hand pump. It is hoped that the number of enrolled students increases from 385 to 600-700 students. Upon completion of the building, the school will be turned over to the community and the Ministry of Education.

Bowein Public School (2010)

Bowein Public School is located in the district of Bowein (Bomi County) and is a little more than 70 km away from the capital city, Monrovia. The town is located in Bomi County with a population of about 1400. The number of school-aged children is estimated at 600. Bowein Public School is a governmental primary school which caters to Bowein Town and surrounding villages. Currently, the school has only three classrooms and 225 students (111 boys and 114 girls) are enrolled. The school is over-crowded and does not have seating capacity for all of its students. The school is also too small to cater to all children in the community (estimated at 600 students).

With funding from Sida, LDA will renovate the existing 3 classrooms and build six additional classrooms, as well as 4 administrative offices, an auditorium, a hand pump, pit latrines, a reading room and a storage room. It is hoped that the number of enrolled students increases from 225 to about 400 students. The school will be turned over to the community and the Ministry of Education upon completion of construction works.

Reparation work for schools formerly renovated by LDA (2010)

LDA has in the past repaired and extended public schools and handed the buildings over to the Liberian Ministry of Education who is responsible for the running of the country’s education system. The Ministry of Education yet lacks the capacity to fully cover for the maintenance of reconstructed buildings. Therefore, LDA wants to make its contribution and carry out necessary reparation works in schools that have been renovated by LDA since 1998. This will concern the following schools:

  • Gbelemah Public School in Zeanzue (Bong County)
  • Solomon Jarboe School in Jarboeville (Sinoe county)
  • David Fejue Public School in Gbatala (Bong County)
  • Zorgowee Elementary and Junior High School in Zorgowee (Nimba County)
  • Gwetamue Community School in Suakoko District (Bong County)
  • Jebbeh Kiazolu Public School in Fandoh (Grand Cape Mount County)

These reparation works are funded by Sida. LDA will work closely with the communities and even leave some tools and equipment with the communities so that the community can take on small reparation works by themselves in the future.
